Jefferson Yap

Jefferson Yap (born May 10, 1986) is a Singaporean Saxophonist and Music Educator. He is currently the Principal Saxophonist of Windstars Ensemble and the Music Director of the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble.
Early life
Jefferson Yap received his early music training at the age of 13, when he played the saxophone in his secondary school band. After graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, he joined the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band and represented the nation in numerous International Military Band Tattoo Festivals in India, Malaysia, Canada and China.
Career
Performing
Jefferson is a classical, pop and jazz performer well-known in the local music scene. He was a featured artist in the 2008 SG Band Fusion Online Interview and has also participated in many local and international saxophone competitions. Jefferson appeared as a jazz soloist during the Singapore Armed Forces Big Band Concert “Get in Line” in 2008, and also played a saxophone concerto, Duex Movements, as a guest with the Nanyang Polytechnic Symphony Orchestra in 2012. Since then, Jefferson has performed with many groups including the “Lush Pop Orchestra” and the “Saxpress Saxophone Quartet” at many venues across Singapore such as the Esplanade and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Lee Foundation Theatre.
Positions
Jefferson is currently the Principal Saxophonist of Windstars Ensemble and a signed artist under the Lush Entertainment Group since 2009. To give back to the community, he founded the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble with Tan Yan Zhang in 2013, a platform for passionate saxophone players to gather and make music. He is also the founder of the Jefferson Pop Orchestra, a music group which performs regularly at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre.
Teaching
Jefferson is a lecturer for the saxophone faculty at the Singapore Raffles Music College, and has taught the saxophone in the Methodist School of Music, Jurongville Secondary School Concert Band, Clementi Town Secondary School Concert Band, Commonwealth Secondary School Concert Band, Riverside Secondary School Concert Band, Presbyterian High School Concert Band, St. Margaret's Secondary School Concert Band, and Concert Band. Presently, Jefferson is the saxophone instructor at the Symphonic Band, Sembawang Secondary School Wind Band, and was also invited to teach secondary school students at the Music Talent Development Centre (Ministry of Education, Singapore).
Jefferson maintains a private saxophone studio in Singapore where he offers private lessons. He works with dozens of young musicians every year during the annual Wind Bands Association of Singapore (WBAS) Youth Band Festival.
Saxophone repair
In 2011, Jefferson studied saxophone repair at the Mahidol University in Thailand. He is a qualified saxophone repair technician and his clients include saxophone players from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore Police Force Band, Symphonic Band, and Anglo-Chinese Junior College Concert Band
