Jayaprakash Mavinakuli

Jayaprakash Mavinakuli is a professor of political science and a contemporary writer in Kannada Langauge from Karnataka, India. His works include a wide variety of Kannada literature like Poems, Stories, plays, short stories etc. He has published as many as 70 books to his credit.
Biography
Early life
He was born on 5 May, 1951 to M. S. Ramabhat(father) and M. R. Savitramma (mother) in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district, Karnataka, India, in undivided agricultural Family.
Education
He has completed his primary education in his own village Karkikoppa, Sagar Taluk in native Kannada medium of instruction. Then he has completed his high school in Municipal High School (presently known as Government Pre-University College) Sagar and Pre-University in L. B. College, Sagar. He has graduated from Maharaja’s College of Mysore in B. A. degree in Political Science and Psychology. He has completed his Master of Arts in Political Science at Mysore University. He has also completed Post Graduate Diploma course in Folklore (From Mysore University) and Law Course (From Karnataka State Open University). He was awarded Ph. D from Mangalore University on the topic “Politics and Culture”.
Professional Career
He started his professional career as a Lecturer in Political Science in Bhandarkar’s College Kundapur from 15.08.1978 and worked in various colleges - Vijaya College, Mulky, Sri Mahaveera College, Moodabidri, Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala as a Reader, Professor and Head of the department of Political Science. He has also served as the Principal of Prestigious M. G. M. College, Udupi for three years. He retired from active professional service on 05.05.2011.
He was the founder Principal of S. R. Shetty Pre-University College, Guledagudda and Principal of ‘Gurukula’ College at Vakwady after his retirement.
A Man of Letters
He has written various short stories and essays even from the student life. He has published his maiden poetry collection in 1978 and entered officially to the literary field. As a poet, he has published in ‘Viraha Kadalu’, ‘Ashwathama’, ‘Kalayana’. His poetry anthologies have been awarded as ‘Kadengodlu Shankara Bhatta Poetry Award’ and ‘Muddana Poetry Award’.
He has published his first novel ‘Anthara(1980)’ which has made him very popular buddying novelist. Granthaloka has considered this novel as one of the first twelve books of the year. His novel also serialized in kannada weekly Taranga. His novel has been translated into English and Telugu languages.
He is considered as one of the best story writer and published ‘Kala’, Mukhagalu, Hejje moodada hadiyalli, Chndiranethake oduvanamma and Bramharakshasa. His story anthology has won prestigious kannada sahithya academy award. His stories have won prestigious Prajavani Deepavali story competition and Lankesh Pathrike award competition. His selected stories ‘Gandhari kannalli nodiddhu’ also published.
Theater field
He is very active theatre person in Kannada theatre movement.
He has written several dramas ‘Shefalika’, ‘Kodeyappana katha prasanga’, Mahayathre, Roopanthara, Akabara, Nirakarana, Abhiyana, Party and others.
He is an actor both in theatre and films. He has directed several plays. He is also ‘Bihigh’ theatre artist in All India Radio, Mangalore. His collection of several stories also published entitled Jayabharathi. His drama Akbara has been translated into Hindi language. His drama won several awards including Aryabhata, Gorur award, ugrana award.
He has translated Vasantha ruthu mele Japanese drama to Kannada language and also English novel Nenapu niranthara. The monograph on ‘Panditha Mulia Thimmapapyya’ is published by Kendra Sahitya academy. Kendra sahithya academy has also published his two edited volumes. As a theatre person, he has established several drama troops in various places. Government of Karnataka has bestowed on him Kannada Nataka Akademy award. His theatre criticism collected also won ‘Karnataka Nataka Akademy’ Book award too.
Editor
He has edited several important books on Shivarama karantha, U. R. Ananthamurthy, Chandra shekara Kambar, P. v. Acharya, M K Indhira, B. V. Karanth, Vivekanandha, Gandhi and others.
His stories have been included in various annual yearbook published by Karnataka Sahitya academy.
His stories have been dramatized by Hirematt and aired in All India Radio.
His short story anthology has been prescribed as the textbook from Karnataka University Three year’s bachelor degree students.
Social Activities
He was the president of first Udupi district literary teacher’s conference (2000) and also the president of Karkala literary conference.(04-02-2007)
He was forefront leader of teachers’ movement and struggled hard for welfare of teachers. He was the member of syndicate, senate, academic council, finance committee, Karnataka nataka academy member, S.S.L.C. examination board and central academy Kannada language advisory board and others.
He was the founder of Asangatha in Kundapra, Abhimukha in Mulky, Rangabharathi in Mudabidiri, Rangasamskruthi and Bhuvanaranga in Karkala. He was also the general secretary of reception committee of two district’s literary conference and two state literary conference.
He established Shivarama Karantha foundation and working as the general secretary for the last thirty years, annually, It gives away two awards worth of Rupees twenty five thousand. So far, it has awarded more than forty writers.
He has also got training in Poona film and theatre Institute and acted in two Kannada films- 400 (2016) and Breaking news (2012).
