Jay Schneiderman

Jay H. Schneiderman (born April 9, 1962) is a politician and motel owner in Suffolk County, New York. He is currently Southampton Town supervisor, having been inaugurated in January 2016. Schneiderman was a Suffolk County legislator for the Second Legislative District, who served consecutively from 2004 to 2015, having been first elected to the Legislature in the November 2003 election. Facing prospects of being term limited for county legislator, he ran for the office of Southampton Town supervisor. He had previously served as the supervisor of the Town of East Hampton from 2000 to 2004.
Biography
A Long Island native, Schneiderman lives in Southampton. He has two children. He is, with his sister, Helen Ficalora, co-owner of the Breakers Motel on Montauk Highway in Montauk.
After graduating from high school, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Ithaca College and then obtained a Master of Arts in education from the State University of New York at Cortland.
After taking his degree Schneiderman taught science, mathematics, and music in East End schools, managed his family’s business in Montauk, and later formed a property management company.
In 1991 Schneiderman became a member of the Town of East Hampton Zoning Board of Appeals, and was appointed to its chairmanship in 1996. He served in that capacity until 1999 when he was elected to the first of two terms as East Hampton Town supervisor where he served until 2003.
Schneiderman is credited with many accomplishments during his time as a Suffolk County legislator, including the widening of County Road 39 in Southampton, initiating Suffolk County public bus service on Sundays, preserving thousands of acres of open space and farmland, and never raising general fund property taxes in 16 years of elected office.
In 2003 he was elected to the county legislature and re-elected in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
