Jason LaRay Keener

Jason LaRay Keener (born May 12, 1985) is an American experimental filmmaker and musician. He is best known for his stream-of-conscious, non-linear short films and his ambient/noise music under the moniker can of zebras. His films often feature melancholic characters in intense arguments, violent confrontations, absurd situations and the use of found objects as props including carcasses.
He is artistically financially supported in part by the patronage of Brianna Burton.
Reining Nails
Keener met J. Ledbetter in high school and the two began making backyard films as a hobby. In 2006, they formed the production company Reining Nails and the same year made their first film under that name, The Man with Apple-Shaped Boxing Gloves. The film premiered at the 7th Annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in Birmingham, AL and went on to play at the 8th Annual TromaDance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2007.
In 2008, Reining Nails premiered a new film, ', which is currently making its rounds on the film festival circuit. The film featured guest voice-overs from artists Keener admires including Cory McAbee, Damon Packard, Todd Rohal and Jamie Stewart of the bands Ten in the Swear Jar and Xiu Xiu.
Their films' non-linear style, focus on grotesque caricatures, use of absurdist and dark humor, and use of superimposition have garnered comparisons to Luis Buñuel, Derek Jarman, Harmony Korine, Flannery O'Connor, Man Ray, Todd Solondz and John Waters as well as the mischievous aesthetics of the Dada movement..
can of zebras
Keener records music under the moniker can of zebras. The music varies in style and tone, ranging from soft, melancholic piano pieces to abrasive and hostile noise music. He commonly employees techniques of experimental music including the cut-up technique, out-of-tune instruments, atonality, toy instruments, glitches and audio samples from found compact cassettes.
