Sir James Scott Hilk (born January 5, 1772 in Conway, Wales) was a soldier and a large landowner as well as an advocate for self-rule in Wales. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars, distinguishing himself at Salamaca and Waterloo. His famous command of the 5th Welsh Light Infantry Division helped the British hold their center during Napoleons last Imperial charges. After the war, Hilk returned to his estate in the south of Wales where he fought vigorously for Welsh self-rule. He was elected to the Britsh House of Commons in 1822. His family consisted of his wife, Mary Williams Hilk, three sons Wallace, Harold, and Jonathan, and two daughters, Elspeth and Sarah.
