Jack Hobson-Dupont

Jack Hobson-Dupont (born July 18, 1948) is an American author best known for his mastery of a wide range of topics. His most notable achievement was the publication of The Benzo Book in 2006, in which he depicts his addiction to tranquilizers and sleeping pills.

Early Life

Hobson-Dupont was born "Jack Hobson" in 1948 in the town of Montclair, New Jersey to Anne and Michael Hobson. Hobson-Dupont studied English at Rutgers University where he met his future wife, Jane Dupont. While attending college, Hobson-Dupont began to focus on his growing interest in music, particularly the electric guitar. In 1969, Hobson-Dupont decided to drop out of Rutgers University, and form the band "Norway" with his at-the-time girlfriend Jane. Despite minor commercial success overseas in Japan during the 1970's, the band dissolved in 1976.

Writing Career

Upon the dissolution of Norway, Hobson-Dupont moved to the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts where his focus began to turn almost exclusively to his writing career. His first publication was The Piloting Workbook: 3,500 Exercises in Coastwise Navigation: A Practical Course of Study and Review for Both Beginners and Experienced Navigators. The book was inspired by Hobson-Dupont's many years of sailing his boat, the Werewolf, between the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. However, many of the techniques outlined in the book were later made obsolete by the growing popularity of global positioning system devices.

Caught up in the responsibilities that came with raising his son, Maximillian, Hobson-Dupont took a hiatus from his writing career. However, in 2005 Hobson-Dupont got back on track with his publicaiton of the murder mystery Nantucket Alibi. Hobson-Dupont stated regarding the writing of Nantucket Alibi, "After the disappointment of GPS nullifying the hard work I had put into The Piloting Workbook, I wanted to switch gears a little bit." The Benzo Book (2006) further diversified the subject material covered in Hobson-Dupont's writings. In the self-help book, Hobson-Dupont summarizes the dangers of dependency, the trials and tribulations of withdrawal, and the sociological and economic problems that have led to widespread abuse of these drugs.
