A 25 euro coin was struck in 1996 to show what an Irish euro coin could have looked like. As this coin is a private pattern coin, it has never had a legal tender status. It was minted by the International Currency Bureau. Description The obverse showed a harp with the denomination below it and 12 stars within a border and the inscription '25 EURO'. The reverse showed a squirrel on a paper disc with the country name above and the date below in a border and the inscription 'ÉIRE 1996' - Ireland 1996. The edge was plain. Medallic alignment was used between the obverse and reverse. Metallic composition Cupronickel (20 and 40 grams), brass, silver (23 and 46 grams), and gold.
