IPhone and iPod touch homebrew installers

Installers for the iPhone and iPod touch are applications for installing unsigned third party applications on or extending the capabilities of an iPhone or iPod touch.

Method of Operation
iPhones and iPod touches cannot be used to run software that isn't from Apple's official App Store, however a jailbroken device is capable of running unsigned software. Almost all software deployment is handled with a package management system and as a result jailbreaking a device generally means also installing a package management application.

Core Software

Cydia
Cydia is an open source package management application by Jay Freeman used for installing third party applications on your iPod touch or iPhone. For a long period, it was the only compatible installer for the 2.x.x firmware. Cydia also has been known not to be favored by most people intel the release of 2.x.x. As Installer was the main application

Installer
Installer, by Nullriver is a package management application and was the primary package management system on the 1.x.x firmware. However, due to a long delayed release after the July 11 2.0 upgrade and lack of support by application developers as a result, Installer has fallen into disuse.

AppSnapp
AppSnapp, is an online installer for Installer. By taking advantage of a TIFF exploit, it was able to install Installer on iPhones and iPods using certain firmware versions (and also patched the exploit in question).
