International T-Shirt Day

International T-Shirt Day is a day to honor the T-shirt as both a fashion item and a means of self-expression. It is celebrated each year on the first day of summer.
Background
T-shirts are thought by many to be "the most universal fashion garment". While serving a very practical purpose as an item of underwear or stand alone clothing, they have over the last decades also gained siginificance as "universal display" . They have become a canvas for opinion, taste and personal preference or allegiance. Whilst being ubiquitous to the point of not being noticed, printed T-shirts often make a difference and allow their wearers to make a condensed statement about themselves.
The International T-Shirt Day is thus meant to honor the many facets and versatility of this garment, and to give its fans a chance to express their love of it.
Origin
The first International T-Shirt Day was celebrated on June 20, 2008, in Boston, USA, and on June 21st in Berlin, Germany, under the auspices of creative apparel company Spreadshirt. Festivities included custom printing demonstrations and T-shirt related parties throughout the day. While being initiated by a commercial enterprise, International T-Shirt Day is meant as a non-commercial event and an opportunity for T-shirt fans and creators worldwide to organize their own events and venues.
Themes
In 2009, the International T-Shirt Day will be celebrated on June 21. The theme for this year´s holiday is "self expression".
