Independent movie boom

The Independent Movie Boom was a film movement in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s when independent films were promonate in the media and pop culture.

During this time it seemed more inependent films were made than ever.

Beginnings

Film scholars have argued exactly when the start of the independent movie boom began, although most agree it was sometime in the 1980s. Filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch and Spike Lee have been credited as starting it. Films such as She's Gotta Have It, Stranger in Paradise, Drugstore Cowboy and Sex, Lies and Videotape are thought to be early films in the movement.

The Cannes film festival and Sundance Film Festival exposed many film viewers to films they otherwise wouldn't have seen including both American and International films.
