Ilya Sheyman

Ilya Sheyman (born June 1, 1986) is a community organizer and candidate for for the United States House of Representatives elections, 2012. He lives in Waukegan and is a member of the Democratic Party. The district lies in the northeast corner of the state and comprises mostly northern suburbs of Chicago. The district is currently represented by Republican Robert Dold.
Early life, education and career
Ilya Sheyman was born in the former Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of four as Jewish refugees. Sheyman attended public schools in Skokie, Buffalo Grove and Lincolnshire. Ilya graduated from McGill University with a joint degree in Political Science and United States History.
Ilya worked for then Senator Barack Obama in constituent services. Ilya Sheyman worked as an organizer for A+ Illinois, a statewide advocacy organization that worked to improve the quality and funding of public schools. Ilya worked as a Field Director for Democracy for America and as National Mobilization Director for Moveon.org. Ilya co-founded ‘Patriots for Peace,’ an effort to educate and mobilize high school students in opposition to the Iraq war. Ilya is also a founding member of the Community Connection Center in downtown Waukegan.
Ilya Sheyman had raised almost $110,000 by the end of June 30, 2011. The incumbent, Republican Robert Dold, disclosed raising $541,330 by the June 30, 2011 end of the second quarter.
Political Positions
Sheyman supports government action to stimulate the creation of infrastructure jobs and green jobs.
Sheyman supports a fixed timetable to remove American Forces from Afghanistan and Iraq. Sheyman supports redirecting resources to building infrastructure, mass transit and a green economy in Buffalo Grove and North Chicago.
Sheyman supports expanding Social Security and Medicare. Sheyman supports gradually expanding Medicare to cover every single American.
Sheyman supports immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
Sheyman supports full equality for all LGBTQ Americans.
Endorsements
Former Vermont Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean endorsed Ilya Sheyman, stating “Ilya has dedicated his life to moving this country forward and we need more people with his vision and integrity in Congress.”
Ilya Sheyman has been endorsed by the president of *Lake County Federation of Teachers, Local 504, Mike McGue. “Ilya has a track record of standing firmly on the side of public schools and public school teachers,” said McGue. “In a time when the rights of teachers and other public employees are under attack across the country, we need an advocate and a fighter like Ilya representing us in Washington.”
