IEEE NITC

Introduction
IEEE Student Branch at NIT Calicut is one of the technically active student branches of IEEE. The current membership is about 71 student members and 10 faculty members.

This student branch comes under the IEEE Kerala section

Major activities
The major initiatives taken up by IEEE SB include a meet on free and open source software and robotics.
ROBOTICS
* Advanced Workshop on Robotics (March 31-April 1, 2007):

This was the third workshop in the series, concentrating on hands-on learning on AVR micro-controllers (core ATMEGA 128). The participants made their own line follower, grid follower, controlled LCD display. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Sachitananda Malewar of Nex-Robotics Group and his team from IIT Bombay.
* Robonitics Workshop (Dec 30-31, 2006):

This was the second workshop in the series, which saw participation from about 180 students.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. G Venkatesh from Bangalore Robotics Group. It dealt with making a
line follower module using light sensors. Also it gave introductory information about the AVR micro-controller and programmable robots. DOCEL gave a special presentation
on construction and programming of a MICROMOUSE
* Roboshow (Dec 17, 2006):

Roboshow was a demonstration of humanoid robots and biomorphs, presented by Dr. Prahlad Vadakkepat from National University of Singapore. The MaNUS and GeNUS humanoids presented in the roboshow, have won several awards at Robosoccer Cup in previous years. The two robots have more than 20 degrees of freedom.

* Robotrix Workshop (Aug 26-29, 2006):

This was the first workshop in the planned series of robotics
events in Robotics at NIT Calicut. The two 2-day workshops were held back
to back from 26-29th August, 2006 at Chanakya Hall. About 68 teams
(each with 4 students) participated in these 2-day workshops. Concepts of
robot locomotion, degrees of freedom, manipulators, actuators and
electrical controls were discussed. The hands-on sessions consisted of
making a prototype of an earth crane with 5 dof. The workshop was conducted by
a team from TRI Technologies, an alumni of IIT Bombay.

* Robotics contests at Tathva (Oct 27-29, 2006):
There were four robotics contests held during
from 27-29th October.

===FOSS.MEET@NITC===
* Annual meet on Free and Open Source Software

The third FOSS meet was held in the campus from 2nd - 4th March, 2007. About 42 speakers from all over the country, took interactive sessions on General Linux, Embedded Systems and Core Computer Science. About 400 delegates from engineering colleges participated in this three day meet. The highlights of this meet were parallel sessions, in the three halls at NITC, Overnight Programming Marathon, and Unconference by blogger Kiran Jace.
