IBM Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager

IBM Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager is a discovery and component relationship mapping solution for applications, computer systems and network devices in an IT environment. Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manger runs on various platforms such as UNIX (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX), Linux, and Microsoft Windows.
Core Components
Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager has Access Manager has two core components:
* Domain Database (CMDB).
* An anchor or gateway
* Discovery Engine
* Discovery Sensors
A core component of Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM) is the Domain Database (CMDB). Each server, whether it is at the domain level or at the enterprise level includes a CMDB. A CMDB holds the discovered information about configuration items and their relationships. The CMDB uses the Common Data Model (CDM) as its organization.
Common Data Model
The Common Data Model is extensible and includes a variety of object types, including software components (Web, application, and database servers), hosts and operating systems, network elements (routers, switches, load balancers, firewalls, storage), and network services (LDAP, NFS, DNS).
Anchor or Gateway
An anchor acts as a proxy to assist in the discovery process. To discover components, each server must communicate with other computer hosts and network devices. In cases when a firewall prevents direct access from the server to certain hosts or devices, you can specify a computer system that does have access to the hosts or devices to be an anchor. Anchors work on all operating systems supported for Tivoli® Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM).
In a network that contains Windows systems, a Windows system must be specified to serve as a gateway server to discover information about the Windows systems that are running in the IT environment. This gateway server should be in the same firewall zone as the discovered Windows hosts, and must have SSH access from the server.
Discovery engine
An agent-free discovery engine manages the discovery process. The discovery process collects the data that is needed to instantiate the Common Data Model to represent the specific data center infrastructure. The discovery engine provides a workflow framework to schedule, distribute, coordinate, and manage the various discovery sensors.
Discovery Sensors
Core to the discovery process are the discovery sensors. The sensors build upon the Common Data Model to discover the infrastructure components, their configuration, and their dependencies. Discovery sensors use open and secure protocols and access mechanisms to discover the data center components and are centrally deployed and managed.
Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager is also a key component in Tivoli’s Change and Configuration Management Database (CCMDB). TADDM is the first step in populatin the CCMDB that serves as the basis for the automation of ITIL processes such as configuration and change management.
