Hot Lava

Hot Lava is a four-piece, alternative rock band from Richmond, Virginia. Known mainly for writing technophiliac songs such as 'Apple+Option+Fire' and 'JPG in the Sun', Hot Lava writes an array of absurd upbeat pop tunes with, according to allmusic.com, "nothing much of import on their minds." An offshoot of singer-songwriter Allison Apperson's early GarageBand recordings, Hot Lava was initially a duo consisting of Apperson and friend Bill Thompson. Songs from this period mainly consisted of Apperson and Thompson improvising vocals over GarageBand loops while drunk. Bill's contributions would employ various thrift store keyboards and made heavy use of an Omnichord. Eventually, Apperson became proficient enough on the guitar to write melodies and chord progressions to accompany her lyrics. Fans of Whispertown2000, Hot Lava attracted the band's attention and eventually opened for them in North Carolina in 2006.
While this early incarnation of Hot Lava frequently played live shows incorporating temporary drummers and bassists, eventually Thompson moved to Twin Oaks Community and Apperson sought to continue with a more complete and permanent group. The current lineup, together since May 2008, features Apperson on vocals and guitar, Andrew Mowe on bass guitar, Matt Deans on keyboards and guitar and Jared Sosa on drums. Their album 'Lavalogy' was released by Bar/None Records on October 7, 2008 in the United States. In 2008 Hot Lava played MACRoCk, Athens PopFest,CMJ Music Marathon and have played scattered shows on the East Coast usually with friends and acquaintances.
