History
Home Care Assistance was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2002 by clinical psychologists and geriatric care managers James H. and Kathy N. Johnson.
In 2005, Lily Sarafan joined the company as president and spearheaded its franchising efforts, whereby Home Care Assistance began its expansion from the San Francisco Bay Area to locations throughout the United States and Canada.
Balanced Care
Home Care Assistance caregivers are trained in the Balanced Care Method. Balanced Care is a program of care-giving that is based on a series of studies of elders in the Okinawa region of Japan that found that seniors who followed lifestyles of moderation and variety tended to live longer and healthier lives. The Okinawa studies suggest that only one-third of a person’s healthy longevity is based on genetics, while two-thirds are based on lifestyle factors within a person’s control. Based on these findings, Home Care Assistance developed a Balanced Care training program, the components of which include: healthy diet, physical activity, mental activity, social ties, and calmness and purpose.

Through its annual 12 Days of Caring holiday campaign, Home Care Assistance dedicates 12 days each December to education, appreciation and volunteerism. The company runs volunteer days at local food banks and shelters, encourages donations to senior meal delivery programs, partners with local non-profit organizations to collect gifts for those in need, and organizes special appreciation events for caregivers.
