Hohead

Hohead
The term was used to describe people who did not fit the norm in the Maryland area during the late 1960s.
This preceded the term hippie and was used to hurt and isolate youth who dressed outside the acceptable code and had hair longer than the other youth. The term referenced homosexuality and suggested deviant behavior. The high school groups consisted mainly of preppies and greasers. The preppies dressed in slacks, dress shirts and wing tips. The greasers dressed in ray ban shirts, khaki pants, chuck Taylor high top tennis shoes and full length leather trench coats. The greasers took non college prep general education and industrial arts classes, The preppies took college prep courses and received college prep diplomas. Hoheads generally took college prep courses and received college prep diplomas. The schools were racially segregated and the prejudices expressed were generally along religious lines, with preps being mostly Catholic or Jewish and greasers being mostly Baptist. Hoheads were generally agnostic free thinkers. Most were recently relocated from California with their fathers working in government jobs. Drug experimentation was common among hoheads as was an appreciation for black lights and the hippie culture. Physical attacks by greasers on suspected hoheads was common. These activities are documented on the SDS site Several articles contained therein relate the experiences of high school students in the Washington D. C. suburbs which support this article.
Many Hoheads later became members of the SDS, Students for a Democratic Society and participated in the Viet Nam war demonstrations in Washington D.C.
