Hillol Ray (; born 1949) is a BengaliAmerican Civil-Environmental Engineer, and Poet. He was born in a small village in Habra (Hijalpukur, 24 Parganas North), West Bengal, India, to his parents, Nibaran Chandra , and Mrs. AngurLata Ray, and attended Habra High School. Life Ray obtained his undergraduate degree (B.E.) in Civil Engineering from Bengal Engineering College (known as B.E. College - under University of Calcutta), (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology - IIEST) Shibpur, Howrah in 1973 and his master of science degree in Environmental Engineering from North Dakota State University, (NDSU), Fargo, North Dakota, USA. in 1977.Ray started his career as a Civil/Structural Engineer with Placon Limited in India in 1973, and emigrated to USA in 1975, to continue his Graduate Study and analytical research in Environmental Engineering at NDSU. Upon graduation in 1977, Ray started his professional career as an Environmental Engineer with Resource Engineering, Inc. (REI) in Houston, Texas. After a brief stint with REI, Ray moved as a Process Engineer (Environmental)in the Forest Products Division of Brown & Root, Inc.(an affiliate of Halliburton Company) in Houston, Texas (February 1978 - April 1980);as an Environmental Engineer with Ecology and Environment (E & E), Inc. in Dallas, Texas (May 1980 - June 1992); and as a Program Manager with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in theWater Quality Enforcement Division, for the Public Water Supply (PWS) and Underground Injection Control (UIC), (July 1992 - Present). He started writing poems in Bengali at the age of six, and with progression of age, he began to compose poems in English. Throughout his high school and engineering college days, he was appointed as the Student Editor, and his poems and articles appeared in renowned magazines and newspapers in India. During his undergraduate study, Ray worked with Mother Teresa of Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. In February 1975, he was awarded a Green Card (Permanent Resident Visa) by the U.S. Government, and National Science Foundation (NSF) Fellowship at the same time, from NDSU to carry out the Graduate Study and analytical research on Environmental Engineering. His poetic endeavors proliferated upon arrival in USA, and continues still today. Ray became a Naturalized U.S. citizen in July 1986.
