Herp derp

Herp Derp is an internet meme associated with troll culture. It involves the spamming of the words herp and/or derp onto forums, chat rooms, or even user-edited sites, such as . Herp derping, as it is known, has become a popular means of flaming, instigating fights among forum members.
Origin
It is widely believed that the act of Herp Derping originated from the image board website 4chan. On 4chan's forums, users would chastise other users who had made grammatical or spelling errors by calling them a herp derp. Slowly, the usage of the term veered away from jovial criticism towards general spam. As of April 2011, the most common use is to force moderators to "clean", by placing excessive spam on a page.

Due to the user-edited nature of , it soon became a target for Herp Derping. Originally, Herp Derping was performed on random pages, with little purpose. However, it is now most commonly used to attack the user pages of wikignomes; users who edit and clean up pages.
Another form of Herp Derping on is adding the Herp Derp user box to a user's list of user boxes. An example herp derp box is as follows:
User boxes are often added as an addition to other forms of spam, but it is also often the object of a Herp Derper to place a User box unnoticed, for as long as possible.
Relation to Derp
It is currently unknown if, although assumed that the Herp Derp meme takes its name from the Derp meme.
