Here on Earth - Radio Without Borders

Here on Earth is a live call-in radio show and podcast produced by Wisconsin Public Radio. Hosted by Jean Feraca, the program airs weekday afternoons and features hour-long interviews with world citizens about their international movements, cross-cultural ideas and initiatives. The show tends to focus on positive world developments, but does not shy away from urgent global matters like war, poverty, international relations and religion.

Typical topics include social activism, humanitarianism, women's rights, fighting xenophobia, the peace movement, spirituality, world travel, global arts and cultural awareness.

Since its debut in 2003, the show has established a strong bond with Radio Netherlands' EuroQuest program, co-producing a monthly show with the network. It also works with the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Division of International Studies.

Past guests have included South African musicians Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Pakistani women's activist Mukhtaran Bibi, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, anti-Semitism crusader Sister Rose Thering, author and social thinker Parker Palmer, Italian cooking legend Marcella Hazan, Swedish author Henning Mankell, Iraq War correspondent Anne Garrels, Pakistani rock star Salman Ahmad, Israeli adventurer Yossi Ghinsberg, Iranian-American actress and activist Shohreh Aghdashloo, journalist Linda Ellerbee, Paul Rusesabagina of Hotel Rwanda fame and Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man to climb Mount Everest.

The broadcast version of the show airs weekday afternoons at 3 p.m. (Central Standard Time) on the Ideas Network of Wisconsin Public Radio. The program also streams live at its website. The podcast version is available on iTunes and most other podcast sites, including the program's own site, www.hereonearth.org. Here on Earth is also known for its "Food Friday" series, featuring the world's best cooks and food writers every Friday afternoon.

Host Jean Feraca is a native of New York. She has lived in Italy and traveled extensively in Europe, the Mediterranean, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and the Amazon. She now resides in Madison, Wisconsin. Feraca is also an award-winning poet and author of the book I Hear Voices: A Memoir of Love, Death, and the Radio.
