Heather Joy

Heather Joy (born 1985, in New Jersey) in an American born model, photographer, Internet celebrity, and style icon whose popularity sparked in early 2006. She has been able to parlay her internet fame into a career as a photographer, web designer, and hired as a blogger by several companies such as Buzznet and Uber.

Background
Joy grew up in an affluent town of suburban New Jersey and was diagnosed with Panic Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder in her early teens. At age 18 she left home and ran away to New York City where she began taking photographs. Joy began experimenting with self-portrait photography in early 2004 and began posting her work on networking sites such as Myspace and Flickr. Quickly she began garnishing thousands of fans but it was not until she began modeling on a popular alternative pin-up website that her popularity quickly rose. Fans quickly took notice of her unique style and abstract poetry-like style of blogging. She is known for her trademark long black hair extensions, black winged eyeliner, and candid battle with alcoholism that have led to comparisons to troubled singer Amy Winehouse by fans, although she shuns the comparision.

Photography and Modeling
Joy's work consists of mostly digital self-portraits. She has a unique style of post-processing that consists on desaturated red channels and heavy vignetting. She commonly uses dust and scratches brushes in Photoshop along with several filters that mimic analog film photography. She claims to have know formal background in photography and is entirely self-taught. The subjects of her other work consists mainly of cityscapes and industrial urban areas.

She has developed a unique style of modeling that often consists of body contortions and exaggerated facial expressions. Her look is commonly thought of being very diverse and chameleon-esque, although she refuses to be photographed by anyone but herself. She has posed SuicideGirls.com and is the first model to ever use Polaroid photography on the website in a published photo set. She is one the first completely unmodified models on the website to gain widespread popularity despite not fitting into the site's typical model aesthetic .
