Halifax Health Medical Center is a 764-bed hospital located in Daytona Beach, Florida near the Daytona International Speedway. It is the largest hospital serving Volusia and Flagler counties and provides the area's only trauma center, pediatric emergency department, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). History Halifax District Hospital opened January 3, 1928 with 125 licensed beds. Over the course of several decades Halifax Health Medical Center has grown and changed to accommodate the development of the community it serves. During World War II, the hospital became a convalescent facility. In 1986 the hospital was designated as the areas only Level II Trauma Center and changed its name to Halifax Medical Center. In 2007, after many additional services were added, Halifax Medical Center became Halifax Community Health System. After the unification of the Halifax brand, the name of the building is now Halifax Health Medical Center, part of the larger system that is Halifax Health. Simple sprains and compound breaks can be treated here, along with such disorders as osteoporosis, inflammation, and arthritis. Cancers of the bone can also be discovered here, leading to quick referral to the Regional Oncology Centers. Treatments are broad, and there are specialists on site for setting breaks and for conducting surgery. Joint replacements are done routinely, with thousands done a year. Physical therapy is offered to all patients after they are released from hospitalization. Ancillary Services Diabetes Education Diabetes Education at Halifax Health Medical Center is a program designed to help everyone take control of their diabetes. Group classes or individual appointments are offered that allow patients to receive the information they need to manage their diabetes. The goal is to live with diabetes, but without the complications. Everyone can benefit, whether newly diagnosed or diagnosed many years ago. We work with all types of diabetes including Type 1, Type 2, Prediabetes and Gestational Diabetes. The program is accredited with the American Diabetes Association. Most insurance is accepted. Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization The Heart Center at Halifax Health Medical Center offers complete diagnostic resources including four cardiac procedure rooms where diagnostic cardiac catheterizations (cardiac caths) are performed. A cardiac cath involves the insertion of a catheter (long, thin tube) into a blood vessel, usually in the groin. Under x-ray guidance, the catheter is then advanced into the heart. When in place, x-ray contrast dye can be injected through the catheter allowing moving x-ray images of the heart valves, coronary arteries and chambers of the heart. During the procedure, the physician will be able to determine the extent of heart disease and what other treatments such as angioplasty, insertion of a stent, or heart surgery might be needed. Electroencephalography (EEG) An EEG is a diagnostic test that can be performed on an outpatient basis. The EEG detects electrical impulses of the brain. Small metal disks (electrodes) are placed at strategic locations on the scalp. These electrodes are connected to a machine (computer) that monitors and transcribes the electrical impulses of the brain. EEGs are used to look for seizure activity, strokes, headaches and dizziness to determine the affected areas of the brain. The test can be performed on patients who are awake and asleep and is offered in the EEG suite at Halifax Health Medical Center. Electrocardiography (EKG) As an inpatient at Halifax Health Medical Center, a patient’s physician may order an EKG test to determine the electrical activity in the patient's heart. Small patches (electrodes) are attached to the patient’s chest, arms and legs which are then connected to the EKG machine using lead wires. The EKG machine produces a printout or tracing that the physician can compare to a normal tracing of the heart to determine if the patient is suffering from any problems such as enlarged heart, reduced blood flow to the heart, a disturbance in the heart’s electrical system, an electrolyte imbalance, an inflammation or infection of the sac surrounding the heart, valve disease or chest trauma. Health Fitness Center The Halifax Health Medical Center’s Health Fitness Center is a comprehensive wellness facility offering medically-based programs and services to help its clients attain and maintain their highest level of well-being. Exercise physiologists, registered dietitians, educators, certified therapists and technicians - all focus on helping individual patients and clients successfully achieve their personal health and fitness goals. Imaging Services The Imaging Services department offers a complete menu of diagnostic modalities including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Special Procedures, and other Diagnostic Radiology. Board-certified radiologists with specialties in neuroradiology, interventional radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, chest radiology, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and nuclear medicine provide their clinical expertise to the department. The technical staff are licensed and certified or registry eligible in their respective specialties. The hospital features a PACS system that stores digital images and provides instant image retrieval. *Diagnostic Radiology is open around the clock. Portable x-ray and fluoroscopic equipment are available to be taken to surgery, medical/surgical floors, and the intensive care unit to acquire the necessary diagnostic images. *Vascular/Interventional Imaging is responsible for all diagnostic angiography and the majority of interventional procedures performed in Medical Imaging. *Computed Tomography Scanning is performed with the latest in CT technology including multi-detector imaging and 3-D imaging. CT Scanning is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. *Magnetic Resonance Imaging is performed with a state-of-the-art 1.5T scanner. Scan techniques range from routine MRI exams to the latest MR angiography scans. *Nuclear Medicine studies conducted in this area include bone, liver, lung, cardiac, and renal. *Ultrasound studies range from abdominal, and gynecologic to arterial and venous vascular including carotid artery evaluation. Laboratory With state of the art equipment the laboratory at Halifax Health Medical Center has the capacity to perform a full range of diagnostic tests. Hundreds of thousands of medical tests are performed each year by certified medical technologists and lab assistants who are skilled in such disciplines as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, histology, toxicology, immunology and blood banking, and serve under the direction of the hospital's pathologists. Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) PTCA is performed to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease and to restore blood flow to the heart tissue without open heart surgery. PTCAs are performed in special cardiac procedure suites in the Heart Center at Halifax Health Medical Center. A special catheter is inserted into the coronary artery to be treated, usually through the groin. The catheter has a tiny balloon at its tip which is inflated once the catheter has been placed into the narrowed area of the coronary artery. The inflated balloon compresses the blockage on to the walls of the artery and makes a larger opening inside the artery, enabling improved blood flow. PTCA with Stent The PTCA procedure can be reinforced by introducing the placement of a stent. A stent is a tiny, expandable metal coil that is inserted into the coronary artery after the artery has been opened with PTCA. The stent expands within the newly opened area to help keep the artery from narrowing or closing again. Newer stents are coated with medication to prevent the formation of scar tissue inside the stent. These drug-eluding stents release medication within the blood vessel itself over time. The effect of this medication is to inhibit the narrowing of the newly opened blood vessel. The patient’s physician determines if a stent needs to be used and if that stent should be drug-eluding. Pharmacy The pharmacy department at Halifax Health Medical Center provides services to all inpatients and outpatients treated at any of its campuses. The department is staffed by a professional team of pharmacists licensed by the state of Florida. The pharmacists consult with the health care team to provide for the appropriate medical management of the patients. Radiation Oncology Halifax Health Medical Center offers cancer patients state-of-the-art radiation therapy services. Using pinpoint precision, linear accelerators deliver radiation in accordance with the patient’s treatment plan. The equipment moves around the patient, enable the high dose beam of radiation to impact the tumor at the most precise angle while sparing surround healthy tissues. Brachytherapy involves the implantation of a small amount of radioactive material in or near the cancer. Not all cancer patients require or receive radiation therapy. However, if needed, Halifax has the resources to help the patient fight their cancer. Respiration Therapy Halifax Health Medical Center’s respiratory therapy department treats newborn to adult inpatients and outpatients with all types of lung disorders. Routine therapy includes delivery of oxygen, breathing medications, and the use of various therapies to keep the lungs clear. Advanced therapy includes treatment of infants and adults in the intensive care setting, with a focus on improvement from critical illnesses. Pulmonary function and pulmonary stress testing, for both inpatients and outpatients, are used to assess such conditions as COPD, asthma, lung infections and unidentified cardiac problems. da Vinci® Surgical System The Food and Drug Administration has approved the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System for many procedures including urological, general laparoscopic, gynecologic laparoscopic, general noncardiovascular thoracoscopic, and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy surgical procedures. To date, prostate procedures, ob/gyn procedures and some coronary procedures are the most commonly performed with the da Vinci®. At Halifax Health Medical Center, the system is used for gynecologic, gynecologic oncology, and urological surgical procedures. Acute Care Adult Psychiatry The adult inpatient Psychiatric Center is designed for patients whose mental health issues require hospitalization. Halifax Health Medical Center, the only Florida Mental Health Act receiving hospital in Volusia County, Florida, operates a self-contained department of three units whose services include treatment for depression, bipolar, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. The emphasis on safety and a therapeutic milieu is provided by a locked and secure department. Open Heart Surgery Board-certified cardiovascular surgeons perform a variety of procedures including coronary artery bypass graft (CABG or open heart surgery), stents, valve replacement and repair, intervention for congestive heart failure and thoracic aortic surgery to repair aneurysms and perform aortic dissections. Post-surgery patients are cared for in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and later in the step-down cardiac unit. They are specialists in laparoscopic surgery. Neurosurgery Neurosurgeons at Halifax Health Medical Center evaluate and care for disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves utilizing both non-surgical and surgical treatments. These disorders include brain and spine tumors, traumatic injuries, degenerative diseases of the spine, cerebrovascular disorders and hydrocephalus. Many procedures are performed to treat and control pain. The Halifax neurosurgery program continues to pursue the latest techniques and technologies including minimally invasive surgery and stereotactic surgery. Obstetrics The Family Birthplace at Halifax Health Medical Center is recognized for its dedication to personal care for the entire family. The obstetrics team is committed to family-centered birthing and the promotion of gentleness and bonding during and after the birthing process. The experienced nursing staff provide teaching and support for both mom and baby, working to make families comfortable taking the newest member of the family home. Pediatrics Children with a variety of acute conditions are admitted for care at Speediatrics, the pediatrics unit at Halifax Health Medical Center. Emphasis is placed on the needs of the pediatric ambulatory surgery patient, as well as the acute care pediatric patient. This unit seeks to provide the highest quality inpatient care where children can receive treatment in a patient and parent-friendly atmosphere. Halifax Health Medical Center also offers a Level II Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which is a multidisciplinary unit that provides care for infants, children and adolescents who become critically ill or injured. Pulmonology Halifax Health Medical Center treats adult patients with lung disorders including asthma, emphysema, lung cancer, pleural effusions, pneumonia, and other conditions. Patients may receive pulmonary function tests, bronchoscopies, and other diagnostic procedures, as well as medical therapy and preoperative consultations. Renal Dialysis A renal dialysis center is a hospital unit that is approved to furnish the full spectrum of diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative services required for the care of end stage renal disease (ESRD) dialysis patients (including inpatient dialysis furnished directly or under arrangement and outpatient dialysis). Halifax Health Medical Center’s renal dialysis unit offers treatment options for patients with acute and chronic kidney failure. Hemodialysis is provided at the hospital in the acute dialysis unit. Intensive Care Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) The cardiovascular intensive care unit contains seven beds and provides intensive care services to post-cardiac surgery patients. This includes patients requiring coronary bypass grafting, valve replacement, aortic reconstructions and any combination of cardio-thoracic surgery. The nursing staff and other health care professionals who provide care in the unit are dedicated to the intensive care of cardiac patients. Medical Intensive Care Unit The medical intensive care unit at Halifax Health Medical Center is a thirty-twp bed adult intensive care unit. This unit encompasses all patients with non-surgical or neurological critical illness. The medical intensive care unit has particular expertise in sepsis and septic shock, adult respiratory distress syndrome, respiratory failure, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal and hepatic emergencies, and diabetic emergencies. Neonatal Intensive Care Units Description The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Halifax Health Medical Center is the section of the hospital dedicated to the treatment of newborns in need of intensive care. Children are admitted to the PICU when their needs can’t be adequately met on the hospital’s main floors, when they need closer monitoring of their condition (such as after surgery), or they are taking medications that must be carefully supervised. Halifax Health offers the only Level II Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the area, and PICU services are provided twenty-four hours a day. Surgical Intensive Care Unit The 32-bed surgical intensive care unit at Halifax Health Medical Center provides immediate postoperative care for surgical patients with acute medical/surgical conditions and complications who require critical care. The unit treats patients whose clinical condition warrants specialized nursing and advanced technology. The unit accepts patients over the age of sixteen years with existing or life-threatening surgical illness or injury. Patients are admitted from a number of services including general surgery, thoracic, trauma, vascular, orthopedic, gynecology and obstetrics. Outpatient Services Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients with coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, stent, angioplasty, CABG, or valve replacement, can be referred to the Cardiac Rehab Program at Halifax Health Medical Center. Each patient receives an individual exercise and nutrition plan along with appropriate risk factor modification. The goal of outpatient cardiac rehab is to help the patient return to their maximum level of well being. A cardiologist referral is required to participate in the program. Emergency Services Halifax Health Medical Center’s Emergency Department features private triage areas, specialized treatment areas - minor and major medical, trauma, gynecologic and pediatric - and Chest Pain Center. Board-certified emergency physicians are on duty twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty-five days a year. They are supported by skilled, experienced nurses and technicians trained in emergency medicine. Endocrinology The Endocrinology Center at Halifax Health Medical Center offers comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and treatment services for area residents suffering from diabetes and a variety of endocrine and metabolic disorders including parathyroid disease and calcium disorders, adrenal disorders, hormonal abnormalities, osteoporosis, hypoglycemia, lipid disorders, sexual hormone disorders and pituitary disorders. Located in the Halifax Professional Center, a dedicated team of health care professionals helps patients and their families understand and manage their disease through education, positive reinforcement and ongoing motivation. Endoscopic & Gastrointestinal (GI) Services Halifax Health Medical Center’s endoscopy unit offers a variety of services including endoscopy (EGD/Panendoscopy), colonoscopy, ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography), PEG tube insertion, foreign body removal, motility and pH studies and cutting edge new technologies such as Barrx ablation therapy for Barrett’s Esophagus as well as many other services. Interventional Pain Management Services Pain can dramatically impact a person’s life. The interventional pain management program at Halifax Health Medical Center works with individuals suffering from acute, chronic or cancer pain. Experienced physicians, nurses and other health care professionals work with the patient to develop an individualized plan of care. The goal of the program is to return the patient to a more productive lifestyle, improving their quality of life. Lithotripsy Services A device called an Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter sends out waves that travel harmlessly through the body until they find the kidney stones. They target only the kidney stones because nothing in the body is as dense. The kidney stones break into dust from the pulsing waves and just pass out of the body through the urinary tract. Multiple Sclerosis Center Established in 2000, the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center at Halifax Health Medical Center provides specialized, coordinated care for people suffering from this disease. Using a multi-disciplinary team approach to treatment, the Center’s goal is to maintain an individual’s highest level of well-being by controlling symptoms and improving functioning through a variety of modalities. The MS Center is located at Halifax Health Medical Center’s Daytona campus in the 201 Building. Occupational Therapy Occupational therapy is used to assist individuals with physical, developmental or neurological impairments gain independence and an improved quality of life. Treatment focuses on restoring or improving physical and neurological abilities and the ability to participate in daily living activities. Occupational therapists treat patients who are unable to resume their usual daily activities due to illnesses or injuries - including stroke, heart disease, arthritis, neurological disorders and head injuries - or after surgeries, such as total joint replacement. Skilled occupational therapy professionals specialize in providing individually-designed treatment to inpatients and outpatients to help carry out self cares (such as bathing, eating, dressing), homemaking, work and leisure activities. Occupational therapy treatments may include education for self-care and daily living, instruction on the use of assistive, adaptive, supportive and protective devices and equipment, home and leisure adaptations, or tool and work station adaptations. Pediatric Emergency Services Halifax Health Medical Center Emergency Department offers a separate area dedicated to treating pediatric emergencies. The specially-trained staff, including board-certified emergency pediatric specialists and pediatricians, nurses and others, provides child-focused care in a soothing environment that features cheerful colors, televisions and play areas. Large private rooms provide enough space for the entire family to stay with the child during their stay in the Pediatric Emergency Department. Physical Therapy Physical therapy provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment to relieve pain and/or to restore function. Physical therapists assess joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, function of heart and lungs, and performance of activities required in daily living among other responsibilities. Treatment includes therapeutic exercise, cardiovascular endurance training, and training in activities of daily living. Commonly treated conditions include back and neck injuries, fractures, strains, sprains and joint replacements, arthritis, open wounds, sports injuries and neurological disorders, such as strokes and head injuries. Prenatal Diagnostic Services Halifax Health Medical Center offers a complete range of prenatal diagnostic services including: ultrasonic scans, Doppler flow studies, amniocentesis, genetic counseling and maternal/fetal physician consultations. Satellite Hospitals The Halifax Hospital in Port Orange is an eighty-bed community hospital in Port Orange, Florida, with a round-the-clock Emergency Department, four operating rooms, and private patient rooms. Services offered include physical, occupational and speech therapy; imaging services like CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, diagnostic X-ray and ultrasound; laboratory services; same-day surgery; echocardiograms; pulmonary functions; and a gastrointestinal lab.
