Gulf Coast Community Foundation

Gulf Coast Community Foundation ("Gulf Coast") is a public charity that, together with its donors, works to transform its region through bold and proactive philanthropy. It is Florida’s largest community foundation and has awarded more than $120 million in grants in the areas of arts and culture, health and human services, education, civic and economic development, and the environment.
History
Gulf Coast was established in 1995 with $85 million in assets from the sale of Venice Hospital to Bon Secours Health System, Inc. The same spirit of caring that guided the creation of a community hospital in Venice, Florida in 1951 was evident when local visionaries established a community foundation upon the sale of the hospital to a for-profit corporation. Since then, Gulf Coast has awarded more than $100 million in grants.
In addition to awarding grants to nonprofit organizations and scholarships to qualified students for postsecondary education, Gulf Coast creates and funds initiatives designed to effect long-term, systemic change in the communities it serves. Current initiatives include a STEM education initiative to improve student achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math in Sarasota and Charlotte county schools.
