A grow shop or growshop, it is an indoor store where a variety of crops and plants are cultivated. Many people when they hear the word grow shop the first thought that comes to mind is the cultivation of marijuana and hemp, but there are a various other plants that are grown that are legal. The UK climate is not kind to exotic fruits yet citizens of the nation crave them just as they do in the rest of the world and a grow shop can provide them with delicious fresh produce that need not be imported. Bananas, peppers and tomatoes need an artificial environment in order to thrive in the UK. Not only does a grow shop cultivate plants and fruits they also provide customers with pots, hydroponics systems, lamps, pots and potting soil as well as numerous other products for harvesting and growing crops. Grow shops are typically a legal enterprise; they are certainly not without their detractors and plenty of controversy. Local and national authorities increased their investigation of some grow shops that were practicing illegally and meted out punishment to these enterprises. In recent years, many grow shops closed for a short time because of the illegal trade of selling marijuana in coffee shops and were in the business of selling their cuttings to others interested in growing their own marijuana. It is said that there are about 380 grow shops as of 2008 located in the UK. In the United States there is a region in California called the Golden Triangle that grows marijuana for medical purposes and they too are coming under scrutiny from the authorities. It seems that no matter how hard law enforcement comes down on grow shops and other cultivators of marijuana; the practice still goes on as long as the people demand marijuana.
