Green search engines

Green search engines are search engines, often powered by other search engines like Google or Yahoo, that divert their advertising revenues into "green" causes. These causes might be planting trees or buying carbon credits to offset CO2 emissions.

Two main "green search engines" have emerged, both started in the same week in April 2008 in the different poles of the world: Australia and Sweden. Treehoo.com intends to plant trees for most of its profit while Ecocho on the other hand invests in carbon emission offsets.

In 2007 some 8 billion dollars where invested in internet advertising and this year estimates point to more than 20 billion. This shows that these search engines could very well have an immense positive impact in the preservation of the environment of our planet.
