Tompolo (whose real name is Government Ekpumopolo) is a prominent Nigerian rebel leader, notably involved in attacks against oil and gas infrastructures in the oil rich Niger Delta region. Tompolo is one of the commanders of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), “the main rebel faction in the western Delta”. MEND claims to fight for the interests of local people from the Delta region who do not benefit from the humongous oil reserve of their region. However, according to some media opinions, the MEND is more likely to be a criminal organization stealing huge quantities of oil. As of 4 October 2009 Tompolo has agreed to surrender in response to the amnesty offer by the Nigerian government. This follows the handing over of weapons by militant commanders in the eastern Delta region in exchange for the promised amnesty and guarantee of jobs and training by the government.
