Goon Boxing is a sport very similar to boxing. To play the sport one takes empty goon bags blow them up and duct tape them to ones hands to use in the manner of a boxing glove (Goon is a slang name for the cheap drink of Austrlia, bottom of the barrel boxed wine). Backpackes in Austrlia play the sport for fun and recreation. There are few rules but they are important. First rule is do not take the fight serious as it is a recreational sport to play between friends and have fun. The second rule is once the goon bag pops or falls off the hand the fight stops and you retape. The third and final rule is that everyone is a winner in Goon Boxing. The sports history is short but expanding at an incredible rate as it has aired on national media in Australia. The first organized profesional fight was in July of 2011 in Cairns, Australia. Three fighters John Brennan, Landon Wolfe and Corey Chirstensen each faught the other making a total of 3 intense fights. The event was an incredible success and 4 professional leagues arose from the event in an attempt to spread and grow the sport. The World Goon Boxing Federation (WGBF) was created by John Brennan, the World Goon Boxing Organization (WGBO) was created by Landon Wolfe, the International Goon Boxing Commitee (IGBC) was created by Corey Chirstensen and the International Goon Boxing Association (IGBA) was created by Patrick Young. Each has florished and gone on to generate several fun and professional events. All four professional leagues went on to put on a girls Goon Boxing matches in August of 2011 diversifying the sport and pushing the sport in a different direction. The WGBF put on the girls goon boxing match with four fighters in Cairns, Australia in August 2011. The other leagues put on a girls goon boxing match in Mission Beach, Australia also in August 2011. On September 5th 2011 the sport was aired from youtube clips on national telovision in Austrlia as part of a story about backpackers in Cairns, Australia. Clips of Landon Wolfe vs. John Brennan along with all four girl goon boxers from the match in August in Cairns, Australia were aired on the Today Tonight show (see below for a link to the news story). The sport continues to grow through word of mouth and through internet resources. Goon Boxing is a great way to stay in shape and have fun with your friends. The sport is great for individuals who like to drink and beat up their friends in a friendly, healthy enviroment. Goon Boxing usually takes place in parks and is videoed taped (although not essential). Safety is of utmost importance in Goon Goxing and individuals playing take full responsiblity in ensuring it is played safe.
