Founding
Goldberg Segalla was founded in Buffalo, New York, on April 20, 2001, when a group of lawyers departed the now-defunct Saperston & Day to form their own firm. These partners included Neil A. Goldberg, Thomas F. Segalla, Richard J. Cohen, Albert J. D’Aquino, John P. Freedenberg, and Cheryl A. Possenti.
* 2006 - The firm opens offices in Syracuse and Mineola, New York, and Princeton, New Jersey.
* 2007 - Goldberg Segalla adds an office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
* 2009 - The firm expands into Connecticut with a Hartford office.
* 2011 - The firm moves its Long Island office from Mineola to Garden City.
* 2012 - Goldberg Segalla debuts at No. 316 on the National Law Journal's NLJ 350 list of the largest U.S.-based law firms. The firm opens its first international office in London, United Kingdom.
* 2013 - The firm rises to No. 249 on the NLJ 350 and expands its Manhattan office.
* 2014 - Goldberg Segalla ranks No. 228 on the NLJ 350; debuts on the Law360 lists of firms with the most product liability and insurance partners globally; and adds an office in Chicago, Illinois.
* 2015 - Goldberg Segalla reaches the No. 200 spot on the NLJ 350; opens offices in St. Louis, Missouri, and Greensboro, North Carolina, and arranges to double its downtown Buffalo office space in 2016.
* 2016 - Goldberg Segalla opens five additional offices in Newark, Baltimore, Orlando, Miami, and West Palm Beach, and fills out its recently doubled downtown Buffalo headquarters space. It ranks No. 178 on the NLJ 350.
* 2018 - Goldberg Segalla opens an office in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as its first California offices, in Los Angeles and Orange County.
* 2019 - Goldberg Segalla unveils its first-ever rebrand, profiled in The American Lawyer. The National Law Journal ranks the firm as 112th largest headquartered in the U.S., and the fastest-growing firm in the top 125 that had not undertaken a merger.
* 2020 - Founding Managing Partner Rick Cohen announces he will step down from his role after nearly 20 years to spend more time with family; the firm announces that partner Chris Belter will assume the new role of Chief Operating Officer and that the equity partnership will vote on a new managing partner in January 2021. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Goldberg Segalla is a partner with Minority Corporate Counsel Association which champions the hiring, retention, and promotion of diverse attorneys in corporate law departments and law firms, and the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) which is made up of more than 400 corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners, working to build a more open and diverse legal profession. Led by an internal Diversity Task Force that is chaired by partner Joseph M. Hanna, the firm’s diversity efforts have earned recognition from leading national and regional professional and community organizations. Honors bestowed on the firm and Hanna include the George B. Vashon Innovator Award from the MCCA, the Diversity Trailblazer Award from the New York State Bar Association, the Legal Service Award from the Minority Bar Association of Western New York, the Chambers USA Diversity and Inclusion Award for Outstanding Contribution to Furthering the Advancement of Diversity in the Legal Profession, and the Lawyer of the Year award from the Bar Association of Erie County.
