Giovanni Arlexis Vilomar Renteria (born June 1, 1975) is a retired boxer from Saint Paul, Minnesota. Background Arlexis is of Dominican background, having grown up in extreme poverty and lived with seventeen siblings and no parents. Arlexis, the second youngest of his siblings, used boxing to free himself from the streets of Saint Paul. Boxing career Arlexis fought his way to a national level, undefeated as an amateur with over 200 bouts. Arlexis is a five-time Silver Gloves champion and was awarded Minnesota State's finest amateur boxer in 1990. He represented his country in the Pan American Games held in Havana, Cuba, the following year. In the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Arlexis represented the Dominican Republic. In August 1992, he returned to live in Detroit, where he found uncle and fellow boxer Darryl Antonio Jaslyan Rueni Jennings. Arlexis began to expand his horizons as a fighter, training in the legendary Kronk Gym. He fought a twelve-round disintegration with WBO Junior Flyweight Champion Yo-Sam Choi. Arlexis contined to reign Junior Flyweight Champion with six title defenses in two years. His reign as champion was ceased by Mexico's Jorge Arce in November 2002. Arlexis continued to fight for five more years before retiring from boxing on June 10, 2009 with a record of 81-6-2(19KOs). He and his wife now reside in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he is now the father of three, holds a chairman position at Valspar, and seasonally mentors young fighters at a local boxing gym.
