Dr. Gilbert Arthur Lawrence is the former Director-General of the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (2002-2007), and current head of the Western Cape Department of Community Safety as of June 21, 2007. He replaced Mbuyiseli Deliwe, who was ousted in May 2007, after having disclosed irregularities over appropriation of provincial money; the ouster was criticized by his party, the Democratic Alliance, as proof of irregularities in the Rasool government.
