Gender suicide is an idea proposed by doctor Lucas Degeneres to describe the current trends of many psychological turmoil experienced by transgenders and that leads them to cosmetically changing their gender identity to the opposite sex. He argues that with the advent of invasive surgery with little protocol influenced by rights and personal choice that they transcended self-mutilitating practices that if they changed who they are, they become happy. He references the work of Maxwell Maltz, a plastic surgeon, in how he actually got to the core of the problem with his unsatisfied patients and developed visualization techniques to cure their insecurities. Dr. Lucas argues that we could solve such dilemma by not enforcing a new picture to the public, but work with visualization to accept the cruelty of their own self perceived sex and not commit a strange kind of suicidal behavior. Dr. Lucas stated that if this idea reaches to the public, many transgenders will rethink doing risky surgeries into themselves that will not lead to long term happiness, as happiness, he argues, is a personal choice just like their gender identity identification and acceptance of it is a way for them and the world to become a better place.
