Geeta Javdekar is a Hindustani classical vocalist belonging to the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Born in Dharwad, Karnataka, she is a resident of Mumbai, India. Early years Geeta is the daughter of Narasimha M. Joshi and Smt. Nalinibai Joshi. Geeta's maternal house is situated in Mangalwar Peth, Dharwad, the cultural capital of Karnataka. She was initiated into music at the age of 10 by Shri R. P. Hugar and went on to win top honours at district and state-level contests. She topped the merit list in both, the "Sangeet Visharad" and "Sangeet Alankar" examinations and received a scholarship from the Mysore State Sangeet Natak Academy. She stood first in the B.A. (Music) examination of Karnataka University with a record number of marks at the time. Academically, she furthered her career with M.A. (Honours) in English Literature. Geeta continued her tutelage under several maestros: Pt. Panchakshari, Smt. Padmavati Shaligram and Pt. Ratnakar Pai and also received guidance from Padma Vibhushan Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor. Music performances In addition to classical music, she has been applauded for her rendition of light classical themes including "bhajans" in various languages, and "thumris". An "A" grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan (India's national television network), she has given several noted performances including the Durbar Hall of the Mysore Palace, the Savai Gandharv Festival at Pune, The National Center for Performing Arts, Mumbai, and the Hampi Festival, Karnataka and continues to perform at various prestigious music conferences in India as well as in the United States, United Kingdom, and the Gulf. She has toured the US several times for concert performances, which include programmes organized by the Indian Academy of Performing Arts at Rutgers University, NJ, Basant Bahar in the Bay Area, California, Triveni & the SV Temple organization in Pittsburg, PA as well as the Raga Music Circle in Manhattan, NY. Awards In February 2008, Smt. Geeta Javadekar was awarded the Vardharaj Adya Memorial Award, instituted by Karnataka Sangha in Mumbai. She was honored for rendering distinguished service in the field of music and promoting closer ties between the people of the neighbouring Indian states, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
