Gathe Raho

Gathe Raho is a South Asian A’Cappella competition based out of the University of Iowa. Created in 2009, this unique competition brought in a wide variety of collegiate teams from all over the nation, performing at their highest level. Blending the musical cultures of popular songs from India and the USA, Gathe Raho continues to strive towards pleasing audiences and motivating the competing teams alike.

History
Founded by the Indian Student Alliance at the University of Iowa, Gathe Raho was inspired by its fellow competition, Nachte Raho, also held at the University of Iowa. With Nachte Raho already thriving, the members of ISA felt the need to create a new style of competition, spurred on by the love of A’Cappella music. As a result of this passion and dedication, this potentially unrealistic idea quickly sprang into life in early 2009. Held at the Englert Theatre, the first Gathe Raho competition entertained hundreds on Feb. 14, 2009.
Competition
In its inaugural year, Gathe Raho quickly grew to be one of the largest South Asian A’Cappella competitions in the nation. Teams from around the US competed for a total prize of $3500: 1st place receiving $2500 and 2nd place receiving $1000. Six teams vied for the top prize, including:
*Penn Atma - University of Pennsylvania
*Dhamakapella - Case Western Reserve University
*Maize Mirchi - University of Michigan
*Chai-Town - University of Illinois at Champaign
*Brown Sugar - Northwestern University
*Berkeley Dil Se - University of California, Berkeley
In the 2009 competition, first place and second place were taken by Berkeley Dil Se and Maize Mirchi, respectively. The second annual Gathe Raho competition will take place on April 10, 2010 at the Englert Theatre.
