In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the gas spore is a type of plant creature. Publication history The gas spore first appeared in the first edition in the original Monster Manual (1977). The gas spore was further detailed in "The Ecology of the Gas Spore" in Dragon #120 (April 1987). The blast spore appears in the basic edition of D&D in the Companion Rules set, in the Dungeon Masters Companion: Book Two (1984). In 1991, it appears in the Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia. The gas spore appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in under the "fungus" entry in Monstrous Compendium Volume Two (1989), and is reprinted in the Monstrous Manual (1993). The gas spore also appears in I, Tyrant (1996). The gas spore appeared in third edition Dungeons & Dragons in Lords of Madness (2005). Description The gas spore strongly resembles a beholder, and explodes violently when struck. Reception Rob Bricken of io9 identified the gas spore as one of "The 12 Most Obnoxious Dungeons & Dragons Monsters". Other publishers The gas spore appeared in the Tome of Horrors (2002) from Necromancer Games.
