Gape gait. The standard biological gate of a penguin. The stereotypical gait of a penguin commonly refereed to as a 'waddle' has the scientific term Gape associated with it. Devised in the 1970's this term was invented by Marcus Schrodinger from the Netherlands, the term was originally intended to be used instead of the word 'waddle', particularly in scientific papers. However shortly after its introduction there was much confusion caused by many bird enthusiasts, as to whether to use the word 'waddle' or 'gape'. This gate is caused by the complex joint between the Peliotia, the tibiosarsus and the various muscles including the Femorus Bravis.
