Mt watatic

mt watatic ski area
history
mt watatic probably opened in the 1930s or 40s making it one of the first ski areas on a major mountain in Massachusetts. its has no known history for its first few years but likely had a ropetow going half way up. in the early 1960s it grew to the summit and added two t-bars and a ropetow. nothing changed except the adding of night skiing and snow making in the late 60s or early 70s until the 1980s when a double chair was added on the snow fields trail. but the competition of nearby mountains and poor management forced the area to close. in an auction the former ski shop owners, lenard amburgey and barbara amburgey tried to purchase the area and were going to reopen it immediately next season, but couldn't afford it. instead it was sold to a developer who updated it until the 1989 but he waited too long and the town would not let them reopen.
