"Galoot" is an old word, used primarily in Scotland, that means a person with an ungainly, cumbersome, and clumsy personality. Within Internet-based woodworking communities, a galoot is a hand tool aficionado, specifically old hand tools. Other uses 'Galoot' is a word used by the cartoon character Yosemite Sam - he frequently refers to Bugs Bunny as a 'idjut lop-eared galoot'. Galoot is a word often used by the character Nancy Blackett in the Swallows and Amazons series of books. Galoot is a left-recursive acronym which means "Galoots are lovers of old tools". The word galoot features extensively on the 1984 Frank Zappa album Thing-Fish. The word galuth (pronounced galoot) is a Hebrew word meaning exile. So in common usage, a galoot is someone who doesn't fit into the community. Nowadays, some use galoot meaning "A kind of likable oaf". |
