G. Babu Rao

G. Babu Rao is a Biblical translator and educator who has since 2008 been Vice-President of the Society for Biblical Studies in India.
Translation work
As co-translator with Suppogu Israel during 1973-1974, Babu Rao helped translate portions of the Bible (published as Book of Ruth and The Man You Cannot Ignore: The Life and Teachings of Jesus) into modern Telugu, as part of the Bible Society of India's modern language translation programme.
In an essay titled Wisdom Tradition and Indian Parallels with Special Reference to Telugu Literature, written in 1990, he drew parallels between Old Testament wisdom literature and native Telugu writings, suggesting that:

"Our study of Old Testament Wisdom traditions will be more interesting and more constructive if we identify as many parallels as we can in the Indian culture and literature. The goal of our digging into our cultural heritage and relating it to the biblical traditions is to promote goodwill towards our fellow humans and to work together for the welfare of the people in relation to the nature and to our Creator, in order that all humans may be successful in achieving mastery of life."

In 1992, he succeeded Victor Premasagar as coordinator for Telugu Old Testament Common Language Translation with the Bible Society of India Andhra Pradesh Auxiliary, Secunderabad. He was also Auxiliary Secretary from 1998 to 2001.
Other work
Babu Rao was Lecturer in Old Testament at Serampore College, Serampore from 1974 to 1977, and at Andhra Christian Theological College, Hyderabad from 1977 to 1998. In 1985, he produced a content analysis of Old Testament syllabi being taught in the affiliated colleges under the system.
He also served with the Council of Christian Hospitals, Pithapuram, the Christian Medical College, Vellore, and (as India Coordinator for Church Related Ministries) with the Canadian Baptist Ministries.
