Street press is an important vehicle for the local arts and music scene as a bridge for creative entrepeneurs<ref name="BeatMag1000" />.

Beat Magazine was founded on Wednesday the 30th July in 1986 with Neil Finn from crowded house on the cover<ref name="BeatMag1000" />. Director Rob Furst, former nightclub promoter, pioneered the publication and was the first to bring street press to Melbourne<ref name="BeatMag1000" />. Beat magazine is amongst the original and longest running magazines of it's kind. It started with a tiny staff - director Rob Furst, music writer Andrew Watt and founding editor Janine Kerr<ref name="BeatMag1000" />. The magazine had minimal overheads and director Rob Furst would even deliver copies of the magazine himself<ref name="BeatMag1000" />.

Today, Beat Magazine has published over 1000 issues and is distributed to over 1,500 points around Melbourne and regional Victoria weekly which is approximately 34,000 copies (CAB audited)<ref name="FurstMedia" />. Melbourne’s favourite free music magazine are picked up by punters eager for an inside run at the happenings in Australia’s cultural haven; Melbourne<ref name="FurstMedia" />.

Beat TV
Beat is a combination of music, comedy and fast paced youth culture. A weekly video podcast, via its homepage portal of beat.com.au, beat tv has its own online community and is one of Australia’s most popular web shows<ref name="FurstMedia" />. It’s also a popular destination on leading new-media sites like MySpace, Facebook and YouTube<ref name="FurstMedia" />.

Produced by Tim Hamilton and presented by Nick Clarke and Dan Watt the series comprises of irreverent interviews with local and international artists, street-level vox pops and an insight into what is going on in Melbourne clubs and bars<ref name="FurstMedia" />.
