Frontline TopSpot is a product from the Frontline group made by Merial, a veterinary medicine company. Frontline TopSpot is a topical application for the treatment and prevention of fleas and control of ticks on dogs and cats. The active ingredient in Frontline TopSpot is Fipronil. Frontline TopSpot was introduced in 1997 and is one product of the Frontline brand, which includes Frontline Spray and Frontline Plus. Function Frontline TopSpot is a liquid applied to the animal’s skin, optimally to the area between the shoulder blades. The product’s applicator consists of a safety-sealed nozzle and flexible tube. The user must make contact with the pet’s skin. The user squeezes the entire contents of the tube onto the skin. The Fipronil ingredient of Frontline TopSpot is stored in the animal’s sebaceous glands and is delivered to the skin and hair through hair follicles. This function is advantageous because the Fipronil is constantly replaced regardless of bathing, swimming, rainfall, etc., and it is released over time, thereby countering new infections. The medicine can be applied to dogs and cats (including breeding, pregnant, and lactating animals) above eight weeks of age. Frontline TopSpot is applied once per month. For dogs, dosage is administered according to weight. For cats, there is one standard dosage. Frontline TopSpot is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Efficacy claims Merial claims that Frontline TopSpot kills 98-100% of a pet’s existing flea and tick infestation within 24 hours, and remains active for up to three months in dogs and up to six weeks in cats. Frontline TopSpot is replenished through the sebaceous glands (i.e., remains waterproof) for a period of one month after application. Frontline TopSpot also retains almost 100% efficacy within 30 days of application, whereas a leading competing product is reduced to 50% efficacy after 30 days.
