Fresh Starts is a community based volunteer program that helps people transition from shelters, off from the streets, or from other situations. The program helps provide basic household items and furnishings to help people in need make a "fresh start." Mission One of the credos of this program is that "small things make a big impact." People may need to start over for many reasons, including homelessness, fire, divorce or medical issues. Simply trying to stock a new apartment with basic essentials and furniture can be daunting. Volunteers for Fresh Starts help to collect, store and distribute "gently used" items such as kitchenware, bathroom supplies, bedding, and necessary furniture. given by the United Way of Kennebec County in recognition of exceptional community service. As stated in the Kennebec Journal article covering this award, "Fresh Starts fills a void in the community by supporting people who are transitioning to stable housing situations."
