Fred Baughman

Fred A. Baughman, Jr. M.D. (born 1932) is best known as an outspoken critic of psychiatry, and is reported as insisting that attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is "a fraud perpetrated by the psychiatric and pharmaceutical industries on families anxious to understand their behavior". Baughman has testified before the United States Congress, and has been interviewed on PBS on the topic of ADHD. He has made several appearances on talk shows, and has written several self-published books. Baughman has also been a medical adviser for the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an advocacy group established in 1969 by the Church of Scientology, noted opponents of modern psychiatry.
Education and career
For 35 years, Baughman was an adult and child neurologist in private practice. He retired in 1993.
Education
Baughman attended New York University where he graduated in 1955 with a B.S.. Then again in 1960 with his M.D.. He followed that up with a redicency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York form 1961-1962 and the VA Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts from 1962-1964.
Career
Baughman gained certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1968 and in Child Neurology in 1969. In his career, he has held numerous positions. Such as the Medical Advisor to the National Right to Read Foundation, a member of the Academic Review Panel and the Research in English Acquisition and Development Institute (READ), a Director and Grant Recipient of the National Foundation-Birth Defects Clinic at Blogett Memorial Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1966-1975. He is currently a fellow at the American Academy of Neurology.
Critic of ADHD
Baughman, a critic of ADHD testified in the case of Jesson v. Derry, NH Board of education (Judge ruled school can nott order Ritalin use) US District Court, Concord, New Hampshire.
He has testified in approximately 15 cases having to do with the diagnosis of ADHD and its treatment with psychostimulants.
Baughman has discovered and authored descriptions of diseases, and has provided, confirming, extending, descriptions of others. He has authored over 100 articles in the lay press having to do with the health care crisis and with biological psychiatry.
Testimonials
On September 29, 2000, Baughman testified that psychiatry’s claims that it diagnoses and treats actual brain diseases are fraudulent before the US Congress, and before the state legislatures and/or boards of education of Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Arkansas, Wisconsin, and the Parliamentary Committee of the Council of Europe on November 23, 2001. He also testified before the California State Assembly and Senate on March 12-13, April 22 and May 8, 2002. He spoke at The Professor Steve Baldwin Memorial Conference on ADHD “Questions of Behavior,” University of Teesside, U.K. Roundtable participant, Child Medication and Safety Act and other Special Education Issues, National Foundation for Women Legislators, Las Vegas, NV.
