Frank the Lion is a comic strip created by Dale Pywell. The artist featured in the Wednesday, September 19th 2001 edition of the Kettering Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, in an article entitled 'Creating an Impression' along with an overview of the artist's career to date. "Dale Pywell... has already written and illustrated his own novel, created a cartoon comic strip and written a sword and sorcery cartoon adventure. He is already a competent cartoonist... His subject matter can range from the very light and humorous to the very dark...". This time focussing more closely on the Frank the Lion book 'On the Greener side' which was never released. The reporter of the Evening Telegraph Louise Hawgood wrote: “Dale Pywell... was doodling a few years ago when he sketched the characters of Frank the Lion and his side-kick The Monkey. The 17-year-old has now developed the characters into a book entitled Frank: On the Greener Side, which he is canvassing to publishers as well as local shops.” Wellingborough & Rushden Evening Telegraph Monday October 8 2001 p, 29. article entitled "Dale aims to make his mark... with help of a lion called Frank and a mischievous monkey". by Louise Hawgood.. In July of 2001 arrangements were made with the Kettering branch of Waterstones to unveil and sell copies of the comic strip compilation book 'On the Greener Side'. This was to include the author's book signing and personal endorsement. The promotion however did not proceed owing to problems with the ISBN and a lack of saleable copies. On June 5th 2006 the Daily Mail was contacted following discussions with the paper's editor regarding a possible place for a weekly Frank strip. The proposal was later declined. On November 27th 2006 Frank was presented to the Daily Express requesting a weekly slot. The request was later declined owing to the papers already full comic section. On November 28th 2006 Frank was promoted in small campaigns but with relatively little success. A weekly slot was requested in the Daily Mirror, but was declined due to a lack of space. Other papers were contacted including the Mail On Sunday, the Financial Times, the Morning Star and The Independent, none of which could avail themselves to a weekly Frank strip. Since November 13, 2010, Frank has enjoyed a more recent revival on the internet with work being released exclusively on Facebook in weekly strips called “Frank Strip of the Week”. Since going live in early July of 2010 Frank's official website www.frankandthemonkey.com has received more than 12000 hits and is set to release the first official Frank comic strip compilation book entitled 'Frank On the Up and Up' in August of 2011.
