Frank Hegyi Award for Emerging Authors

The Frank Hegyi Award for Emerging Authors was created by the Ottawa Independent Writers (OIW) in 2017 as a new literary award for emerging authors. Named after long-time OIW member and former treasurer, Frank Hegyi, the award carries a cash prize of $500 for the winner and two years of free OIW membership. In its inaugural year, 41 submissions were sent for this award, ranging from books published by Canada's leading publisher (e.g. Random House Canada, Simon and Schuster and ECW Press) to self-published authors. The awards excludes submissions from authors who have already won a major Canadian literary prize. Finalists receive a year's free membership in the OIW. The winner and finalists are invited to read from their books at the Prose in the Park Literary Festival in the Parkdale Park, Ottawa.
