"Four Cypresses" is a song by American indie rock band Grizzly Bear. It was released on June 23, 2017, as the third of five singles from their fifth studio album, Painted Ruins. The track was released with no B-sides. Writing and recording Daniel Rossen stated on the song that the lyrics were written “from the perspective of a homeless person sleeping in the driveway of a place he was staying in L.A., but broadened to encompass his thoughts about the refugee experience and life during wartime.” Music video A music video was released on June 23, 2017, featuring home video footage of Rossen and his family. In an Instagram post related to the video, Rossen is quoted saying: "In lieu of a real hi fi music video, I decided to splice one together from some old Rossen home video footage that was transferred (poorly) from VHS to digital a few years back. Most of this stuff from the late 80s filmed by my father in our yard in LA and on a trip to New York City, mainly the moments where he wandered off and started filming the trees, or the street, or the piles of trash in our garage. The older stuff is Rossen footage from a generation earlier, probably late 50s, that was archived on the same VHS tapes. The guy that appears at the very beginning is my grandfather. The blond kid with the paper maché witch is my brother. The kid watching him from the window is me."
