Foreign relations of the Falkland Islands

Military defence is the responsibility of the United Kingdom.

Territorial dispute

The islands have been the subject of a claim to sovereignty by Argentina since the British return to the islands in 1833.

In pursuit of this claim in 1982, the islands were invaded by Argentina, precipitating the two-month-long undeclared Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom, resulting in the defeat and withdrawal of Argentine forces. The civilian population reject Argentina's sovereignty claims with English, rather than Spanish, being the language used on the islands.

On the 2 April, 2007, exactly 25 years after the Argentine invasion, Argentina's President Néstor Kirchner renewed Argentina's claim over the Falkland Islands, asking for the UK to resume talks on sovereignty.
