A focused promoter contains either a single transcription start site or a distinct cluster of start sites over several nucleotides. Focused promoters are sometimes referred to as narrow peak (NP) promoters. Dispersed promoters exhibit a clearly defined periodic nucleosome organization. Cells can undergo a switch from a TFIID-based transcription system, for example, to a TRF3-TAF3-based system.<ref nameGershon/> Generally focused promoters appear to be associated with regulated genes, whereas dispersed promoters are used in constitutive genes.<ref nameGershon/>
