FOB Hammer

FOB Hammer is a Forward Operating Base for American forces in Iraq.
United States Air Force RED HORSE engineers from the 557 ERHS with assistance from technical surveyors, George Delisle And Anthony Haroldson, built FOB Hammer in 45 days at a cost of . FOB Hammer is located in a remote desert area approximately east of Baghdad and west of the Iran-Iraq border and is within the Iraqi Army's Besmaya Range Complex. The 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 3rd Infantry Division moved into the FOB in May 2007.
The FOB has a LZ (Landing Zone), which has constant air traffic throughout the day and night, except when hostile activities were acknowledged in the area.
An Iraqi brick factory is located only a couple of miles from the FOB and dipenses black acrid smoke over the FOB in addition to an on-site burn-pit, which disburses toxins onto the camp caused by shifts in wind patterns. Porta-johns are well placed throughout the FOB as are guard towers on the perimeter. Ugandan's are our eyes and ears as they are ever vigilant surveilling the surrounding areas for any and all anomalies and movements.
Ablution units are a plus in this dirty, dusty location in the Iraqi desert. However, continued monitoring and repair of the unit's plumbing and electrical components is paramount. Unfortunately, the quality of replacement materials is lacking causing many failures to be re-addressed consumming and wasting valuable time and effort which could be better spent addressing new repairs versus repairs of repairs.
In November 2008 the 82nd Airborne began the transition to take charge of FOB Hammer from the 2BCT1AD.
