Flash router

A flash router is a wifi router that has been re-flashed with a third party aftermarket firmware not developed by the company that sells the wifi router. This is possible because the designs of commercially available wifi routers from companies like Cisco, Netgear, Belkin and others, are based on a common reference design from companies such as Broadcom and Qualcomm, and other semiconductor IC manufacturers. In others words, it is primarily the software and re-packaging of the router reference designs that are proprietary to the companies that sell the wifi router; with the full specification of the CPU and chipsets used in the router publicly available from the IC semiconductor company that sells the IC's and router reference designs.
One well known third party flash router software that has gained popularity is call DD-WRT. The reason why this third party router firmware has gained popularity is because it expands the feature set of cheap low-end wifi routers to include VPN setup out of the box.
Another popular third party flash router firmware based on linux is called Tomato
