FIREWALKER is a NSA codeword that refers to a covert network tap embedded in the body of a hybrid USB/RJ45 socket, of the kind often found on computer motherboards. The socket contains a number of circuit boards that facilitate capturing and injecting network traffic over the RJ45 link, as well as communicating with adversaries over a proprietary RF link. It is claimed that the device is capable of making a VPN link back to the NSA's Remote Operations Center, or even crossing an air gap via the RF communications. The device is claimed to be able to communicate with HOWLERMONKEY-based devices to communicate with an adversary across multiple hops. Cost A lot of 50 units was priced at USD$537,000 in August 2008. Timeline The document is dated 2008-08-05, stating that a prototype is available as of August 2008.
