Finetune

Finetune is an online music recommendation service based on the Adobe Flash platform. Finetune streams tracks from the user's favorite artists, and lets the user create and share playlists online. Finetune playlists have a minimum of 45 songs in them. If the user's playlist does not have enough songs, Finetune will add songs similar to ones the user listens to.

There are several limitations. For example, the user can only include three songs by any one artist in any given playlist. Also, the songs play randomly in the playlists and the user cannot return to tracks previously played during the session, or skip more than four or five tracks in a row.

Finetune allows users of the site to share their playlists by generating URLs that link to a playlist, and allowing users to send the URLs to other people. Also, Finetune provides HTML code to embed flash mini-players into sites such as MySpace.

Finetune has also released Finetune Desktop, a desktop player utilizing the Adobe Integrated Runtime.

Finetune has also released a Finetune Wii Player, which lets users stream music from their favorite artists, playlists, or tags on the Wii game system.

Finetune Service
Finetune is a free (as in beer) music service started in 2000. According to their website, it is operated by people that came from early Napster, Gigabeat, and Listen.com. It is owned by NetRadio Solutions. Finetune lets users create their own playlists of songs they select. However, there are certain limitations to this. For instance, a user can only have 3 songs per artist, the playlist must contain a minimum of 45 tracks, and the songs play back in a randomized order, by no consent of the user. However, once a playlist is made, it can be listened to indefinitely. Another feature of the Finetune service is the ability to play Tag Radio. The finetune service lets users tag their favorite artists, albums, and playlists by a certain word. This word is then listed in the user's tag page. Clicking on the link will show a list of everything the user has tagged using that term. When a tag has a minimum of 10 artists, finetune can create a playlist based off the artists, albums, and playlists within the tag. Songs played using this generally is more focused on various songs from the albums based off the contents of the tag.
